A Gift To Glory In continues the story of the Missouri Botanical Garden presented in Father Faherty's book Henry Shaw: His Life and Legacies. Shaw's Garden, developed through the last 30 years of Shaw's life, was further improved and expanded during the beginning of the next century by a series of eminent botanist-administrators to become an internationally known educational institution.
William Trelease, director for 28 years, George T. Moore, director for 42 years, and Edgar Anderson, director for three years, each contributed to the Garden his special talents. Horticultural displays were introduced, the library was continually expanded, and an active teaching and research program initiated.
Purchase of the Gray Summit property, although acquired as a site to which to move the Garden out of the city smog, added a new dimension to the Garden that will become increasingly useful for public education with its outstanding collection of evergreen trees and its regenerating native glade vegetation. In a period of almost 75 years through major depressions and international conflicts the Garden maintained its place as a green sanctuary in a changing city. Shaw's legacy continues to grow wisely as we approach the challenges of the next century. This is a story of far-sighted pioneers, a part of the history of a city, its people, and its gardens.
- William Barnaby Faherty, S.J.
