Description Author(s)/Illustrator(s)

Florence Woolward was the legendary author and illustrator of the last of the grand tomes in elephant-folio format (11 ¾ by 16 ½ inches) of the nineteenth-century. Her life-size paintings in gouache watercolor (1879-1898) were commissioned by the Marquis of Lothian and featured his extraordinary orchid collection at Newbattle Abbey near Edinburgh, Scotland. The present heir, Lord Ancram, recognized their historical significance, resulting in the reproduction of sixty of these paintings as the Thesaurus Woolwardiae. This never-before-published series is divided into four volumes of 15 full-color plates produced at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Part Four illustrates two native Scottish orchids Epipactis helleborine and Orchis mascula. Other attractive and classic orchids such as Cattleya and Laelia are shown, including those ranging from Mexico, Guatemala, Guiana, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, India and Nepal.
